Interesting Blackberry Issue…

I recently upgraded my Blackberry Storm microSD card from 8GB to 16GB since I wanted to dump my music collection to it and use my Storm as my MP3 player. Good idea, right? Well, I thought it was until I stumbled across a problem that no one else seems to have experienced.

Allow me to explain. I copied the entire memory contents from my Storm’s 8GB card to my laptop. I then installed the new memory card and copied everything back to the new 16GB card. I then dumped my MP3 collection to the Storm. At this point, everything should have been normal, but it wasn’t quite right. All the files seemed to be there, however, photos were not appearing in the media browser. I could view the pictures using the file manager on the Storm, but this was very annoying.

I found nothing online regarding this issue. After several days of research and some playing around with the Storm, I decided to try something. I deleted the file on the media card named /Media Card/BlackBerry/pictures/BBThumbs.dat.rem. This seemed to fix the problem. I know that .rem files are files that have been encrypted by the Storm and I figured something must have gone wrong. Simply deleting this file has resolved my issue. I no longer encrypt my photos on the media card as I have found it to cause performance issues and problems copying the data off the media card. There are no photos of blackmail material on the media card anyway, so all is ok. 🙂

I hope this article helps someone with a similar problem. As for the rest of functionality, such as the MP3 player, I am happy to report that it works great!
